Teaching leadership and responsibility

This course offers first aid training and basic care-giving skills for students 11 - 15 years old. Increasingly, parents expect the sitters they higher to have Red Cross training. The program is respected for developing sitters who are comfortable, confident, and competent.

Participants learn about how to prevent and respond to emergencies, how to meet the needs of children of different ages, and how to promote oneself as a sitter.

Course Details:

  • The course can be completed over a weekend or spread out up to four days.
  • Perfect attendance is required to complete the course.
  • Students must demonstrate their skills and achieve at least 75% on a written exam.
  • Students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate, a first aid kit, and a copy of the Babysitting Manual.
  • Fee: $50.00 plus tax.

Lifesaving Fitness

The Lifesaving Fitness course is a weekly program that teaches the importance of physical fitness in lifesaving. The course is an ideal choice for students wanting to keep their skills up before attaining their next lifesaving level.

All participants must be 30 years of age or younger, or have medical approval. Successful candidates will earn a Bronze, Silver, or Gold Fitness Award crest, certification card.

Cost: $26.50 plus tax per class, plus pool admissions

Candidates will be tested on the following:

  • Strength & endurance: Demonstrate an understanding of how to evaluate and improve strength and endurance fitness for lifesaving and physical activity.
  • Intensity & strength: Demonstrate ability to evaluate intensity of activity and personal strength.
  • Rescue breathing: Demonstrate rescue breathing for a period of 3 min. at pool- or dockside (victim and rescuer in deep water) with a victim of the candidate's choice or with a suitable device (manikin or equivalent).
  • Power: Swim any stroke (dive start) 25 m or yd. or 20 yd. in Bronze, Silver or Gold time.
  • Endurance: Swim any stroke (dive start) 200 m or yd. in Bronze, Silver or Gold time.
  • Upper body strength: Demonstrate ability to get out of the water onto a pool deck or dock using only the arms to lift self from the water and place one foot on the deck or dock.
  • Supportive kick: While treading water, hold a 4.5 kg or 10 lb. object at the surface with one or two hands for Bronze, Silver or Gold time.
  • Removal of object: Remove a 9 kg (20 lb.) object located at a depth of 3 m or yd. and at a distance of 3 m or yd from dock or poolside; surface, carry and place on dock or deck.
  • Tow: Tow a passive victim (in Bronze, Silver or Gold time), with a suitable buoyant device (ring buoy, kickboard, rescue can or tube, etc.); rescuer and victim to start in the water.
 
Bronze Star Register Now

The Bronze Star course prepares students for success in Bronze Medallion. It is a 10-12 hour course during which participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills individually and in pairs. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. The program includes a timed 400 m swim. There is no pre-requisite to take this course.

Cost: $350.00 plus tax and pool admission

 

Aqua Essence's Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion, and Bronze Cross programs cater to the individual learning styles of our students. Class size is limited to five students, guaranteeing that each participant receives personal attention throughout the program. We have designed our Bronze programs as "crash courses" that meet the scheduling needs of students without compromising skill development.

Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid Register Now

Candidates must have a minimum of either a Level 10 Red Cross Swim Award, a Bronze Star award, or must be 13 years old.

Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles that make up the four components of water rescue: judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries, and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk. Lifesavers learn to respond to increasingly complex situations involving conscious and unconscious victims in contact and non-contact rescues. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance with a timed swim.

The Emergency First Aid course is for people who want a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include: victim assessment, rescue breathing, CPR, AED use, choking, respiratory and circulatory emergencies such as heart attack and stroke, bone and joint injuries, burns, poisoning, medical/legal issues, and how to deal with external bleeding. CPR-A is included.

Cost: $350.00 plus tax and pool admission, includes Canadian First Aid Manual

Canadian Lifesaving Manual and CPR Manual, and Leadership Kit

Must be able to perform the following requirements:

  • Swim head up 6 x 25 M or YD, maintaining a consistent pace and work to rest ratio. Check pulse after the last and repeat.
  • Swim 500 M, or 550 YD in 15 minutes or better using any combination of strokes of the candidate’s choice.

The course is a combination of classroom and pool learning. Generally the mornings are spent in the classrooms and the afternoons are at the pool. Candidates should be able to provide their own transportation.

Our candidates who complete Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross perform better than their peers in higher level courses and have greater success finding related employment.

Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid Register Now

Candidates in the Bronze Cross program must have a Bronze Medallion.

Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures, and teamwork. Lifesavers learn the skills involved in the rescue of a victim with a spinal injury, the rescue of a victim without a pulse, and the rescue of a victim with deteriorating circumstances.

The Standard First Aid course provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. This course is for those who want an in-depth understanding of first aid. It includes all of the content for Emergency First Aid as well as spinal injuries, heat/cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies. CPR-C is included.

Cost: $350.00 plus tax and pool admission, and includes the Canadian First Aid Manual.

Supplies not included are: Canadian Lifesaving Manual, CPR Manual, and Leadership Kit.

Must be able to perform the following requirements:

  • Swim head-up for 2 sets of 6 x 25 M or YD while maintaining a consistent pace and work-to-rest ratio. Rest for 1 minute between sets. Check your pulse after the last repeat in each set.
  • Swim 600 M or 650 YD in 18 minutes or better using any combination of the candidates’ choice.

The course is a combination of classroom and pool learning. Generally the mornings are spent in the classrooms and the afternoons are at the pool. Candidates should be able to provide their own transportation.

Examinations for all of Aqua Essence's Bronze programs are conducted by independent, external examiners.

National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Register Now

Aqua Essence is proud to deliver the NLS program. The program is the standard of excellence in water rescue, accident prevention, and emergency care.

To qualify for NLS, you must be at least 16-years-old and have your Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid.

NLS is a 40-hour course, held in multiple locations (students are responsible for their own transportation). Aqua Essence assigns only 6 candidates per instructor allowing for significant individual attention.

Cost: $500 plus tax and pool admission, includes supplies, does not include leadership kit

NLS Recertification: $150.00 plus tax and pool admission

Successful candidates will:

  • Demonstrate anaerobic fitness and strength for an object recovery
    Starting in the water, swim 15 metres and surface dive to recover a 9 kg (20 lb.) object; surface and carry the object 5 metres - all within 40 seconds
  • Demonstrate anaerobic fitness and skill for an underwater swim
    Starting in the water, submerge and swim 15 metres underwater.
  • Demonstrate anaerobic fitness
    Starting in the water, swim 50 metres head-up within 60 seconds (50 yd. within 55 sec).
  • Demonstrate endurance and strength for a submerged manikin or victim recovery and rescue
    Starting in the water, swim to recover a submerged manikin or victim located 25 metres away; carry the manikin or victim 25 metres - all within 90 seconds (50 yd. within 82 sec.).
  • Demonstrate aerobic fitness and endurance
    Swim 400 metres within 10 minutes (400 yd. within 9:10 minutes).

CPR–C Register Now

CPR–C covers 1- and 2-person rescues, obstructed airway, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and choking on adults, children, and infants. In every course, candidates learn about emergencies like heart attacks and stroke. It is a hands-on course designed to ensure that participants are comfortable performing CPR and know how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Group course can be arranged for your family or your colleagues.

The Emergency First Aid course is for people who want a general knowledge of first aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course Register Now

Water Safety Instructor Course

The Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course prepares candidates to instruct Red Cross Swim programs.

Prerequisites:

  • 15 years of age to begin the WSI – Online.
  • Ability to perform Red Cross Swim Kids 10 strokes and skills.
  • One of: Red Cross Assistant Lifeguard, Emergency First Aid or higher, or Bronze Cross. Certifications do not need to be current.

Cost: $550.00 plus tax and pool admission. The fee includes the required binder and manual.

Completion Criteria:

  • Attend and participate in 100% of all WSI Course components.
  • All course components (WSI – Skills Evaluation, WSI – Online, WSI – Teaching Experience, and WSI – Classroom and Pool) are evaluated against specific evaluation criteria on a pass/fail basis.
  • All course components must be completed for successful completion of the WSI certification
